The Randald S. Mackenzie papers, 1867-1874.

Contains the following types of materials: correspondence. Contains information pertaining to the following wars and time periods: 1865-1897 and the Indian Wars. Contains information pertaining to the following military unit and organization: 4th U.S. Cavalry Regiment. General description of the collection: The Ranald Slidell MacKenzie papers include a copybook of official letters (1873-1874). Most letters deal with efforts to return the Kickapoo, Pottawatamie, Lepan and Mescalero Apache Indians from Mexico to the United States and to pacify the Rio Grande frontier from June-August 1873. Principal correspondents were: General Philip H. Sheridan, Brigadier-General Christopher C. Augur, Lieutenant-Colonel William R. Shafter, Thomas G. Williams, Henry M. Atkinson, William Schuhardt and Vittoriano Cededa. Also includes copies of findings of regimental councils and administration of the 40th U.S. Infantry Regiment commanded by Colonel Nelson A. Miles (1867-1869).
